Australian copyright industries measure their worth

During 2006/07 Australia’s copyright industries generated $97.7 billion, or 10.3% of the Gross Domestic Product, according to a report commissioned by the Australian Copyright Council and prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

The report, which was launched in Canberra at the end of November, found that during 2006/07 Australia’s copyright industries not only generated $97.7 billion, they also:

  • employed 837,507 people – or 8.0% of Australia’s workforce; and
  • generated $6.873 billion in exports – equal to 4.1% of total exports.

The report also found that Australia’s economy has a relatively high dependence on copyright industries. Contribution to GDP was second only to the United States.
