Stories From Another Australia

Project Name: Stories From Another Australia

Funding Recipient: Co-Curious

Activity: ‘Stories From Another Australia’ is a talent and career development program that aims to address issues around the lack of cultural diversity in the screen industry through a tailored skills development program designed to bring together emerging CaLD screenwriters and experienced industry practitioners. The program will create a network of support and potential collaborators. It will also provide participants with the tools to unlock four key enablers essential in establishing and sustaining a screenwriting career.

Outcome: “Stories From Another Australia has increased the pool of professional standard, well trained writers from under-represented backgrounds who are considered ‘bankable’ by broadcasters, distributors and streamers. Using our charity status and ability to attract philanthropic funds, Co-Curious has the capacity to run targeted skills development programs for emerging writers that other production companies cannot. Extending that seed training support into screen credits with national and international reach builds a cohort of young writers with both strong craft skills and repute. The program has also allowed us to continue to develop and refine best practice models for working with creatives from under-represented backgrounds, identifying obstacles to better inclusion and more appropriate ways of working, in a commercially viable way. While most immediately of use to Co-Curious, in time we hope and expect our practices will be incorporated into the wider industry.” – Annabel Davis
